A university-validated degree has launched at New College Lanarkshire - the first of its kind for the Dental profession in the UK.

The BSc Dental Nursing has been created by New College Lanarkshire and University of the West of Scotland (UWS) in response to demand from industry professionals to provide a programme of study for dental nurses to future-proof their career and place them at the same level as other professional groups within a dental team.

The partnership will offer students the opportunity to study the university-validated degree-level qualification within the vibrant and innovative college environment – with features including its industry leading dental facilities which opened in February 2016.

Jennifer Lowe, Assistant Head of Faculty for Care and Science at New College Lanarkshire, said:

" The BSc Dental Nursing was developed in response to demand from dentists as employers, dental nurses and dental nurse training providers that dental nurses should be qualified to degree level and beyond.”

The practice of dentistry is rapidly changing with many new and emerging technologies now being used. Demand for high end aesthetic treatments with advanced quality care and a focus on oral disease prevention demands the experience and professionalism of a highly skilled dental nurse with a diverse skills set. This degree has been purposefully designed to develop this skills set and is a welcomed addition to the range of dental nursing courses offered at the Coatbridge campus of New College Lanarkshire.

The degree programme will be offered to students who have an HND or equivalent in Dental Nursing in partnership with UWS – the first model of its kind for its School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery.

Karen Wilson, Dean of University of the West of Scotland’s School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery, said:

“The University enjoys extremely close links with New College Lanarkshire and we are delighted to have validated this programme which has been developed in response to demand from the dental sector.”

The part time course is held over two academic years and learners will attend New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge Campus for one day per week spanning two academic years – allowing students to study while on the job.

Students will be trained in the College’s state-of-the-art dental facilities, allowing students to learn advanced Dental Nursing practice while putting their skills to use in a practical environment.

Students who take on the degree will have the qualifications to work at a higher level within a practice and employers will benefit from having staff who are qualified to the highest level in Dental Nursing and also leadership, health promotion and the latest technology.
