A group of football professionals from Maltese side Kercem Ajax FC have spent a week training at New College Lanarkshire.

Eleven youth coaches participated in the educational visit that included football coaching sessions, lectures and cultural activities.

They were tutored by ex-Celtic star Davie Hay and Linlithgow Rose assistant manager Todd Lumsden, who work at our specialist sports campus at Broadwood.

The team from Malta stayed at the Halls of Residence at our Motherwell Campus.

Their seven-day itinerary included training sessions in communication and organisational skills, leadership tuition and working with children and youths.

They also attended lectures on subjects such as innovative coaching skills, sports nutrition, fitness and employment opportunities.

In addition to leisure visits to Glasgow and Edinburgh, they observed Celtic FC in training and listened to a presentation by the Parkhead side’s Head of Youth, Chris McCart.

The group also hosted a cultural evening during their stay, which involved preparing Maltese delicacies and delivering a presentation on Gozitan culture.

The team were accompanied by sports journalist Mark Mizzi, who was covering the trip for Maltese TV.

George Pace of Kercem Ajax said: “Our stay was a great success and a very fruitful one for our ongoing work with young people.

“We were made to feel at home at each and every venue and the various coaches and tutors delivering presentations engaged with us and made sure we got what we were looking for from the training programme.

“We would like to thank all involved and have no doubt that we will use the knowledge and skills gained in the future.”

Deborah Grant, Commercial Development Manager at New College Lanarkshire, said: “Thanks to our specialist sports team and partnerships with Celtic FC and Braidhurst Football Academy, we have been able to offer Kercem Ajax FC youth coaches an innovative development programme incorporating coaching skills, sports psychology, nutrition and fitness.

“The cultural evening hosted by Kercem Ajax during their stay was a great opportunity to learn more about the Gozitan culture, the positive impact this programme has had on them and how they will apply their learning within the club.”
