Aliesha Devan, 19, from Airdrie, chose to study NC Early Education and Childcare at our Coatbridge Campus after enjoying it as one of her school subjects – and she decided to take that interest further.
The former Airdrie Academy pupil, whose photograph features on billboards and buses across Lanarkshire as part of our ‘Turning A Like’ campaign, is working towards her dream job as a nursery nurse.
I chose New College Lanarkshire after reading up about the College on its website and it sounded appealing, and the courses provided were exactly what I wanted to do.
I really like the fact that we are put into placement for a few weeks every year – it really helps open our eyes to what we would be facing every day if we did childcare as a job and lets us see if it's the career we really want.
The most important thing I’ve learned is about children’s rights and protection issues. I had no idea how much you need to know and take into account when doing something like childcare.
My favourite part about being a student at the Coatbridge Campus is definitely the opportunities you get to prove yourself, for example getting out into a placement to learn new things and grow as person while doing what you want to do.
I’d advise anyone thinking of doing a similar course to definitely go for it if it’s what they want to do. I’d say you have to be 100% sure about your choice, as you have to put in a lot of work and effort, but, of course, it is all worth it.
In ten years’ time I hope to be working in a nursery as a nursery nurse.
