Calum Waltho, 21, who lives in Carluke, is another of our WorldSkills UK success stories – he took home a bronze medal in Mechanical Engineering: CAD from the contest in Birmingham in November 2015.
A graduate of HND Computer Aided Draughting & Design (CADD), he is now employed full-time with a Glasgow-based structural engineering consultancy, David Narro Associates.
I chose to study CADD at the Motherwell Campus because I enjoyed graphic communication in high school and wanted to further my studies in the topic.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to compete in WorldSkills, as it allowed me to further my training and test my skills against the best in the UK. The high quality facilities at the College were also brilliant as I could try the most cutting-edge equipment, such as the 3D printer.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to always push yourself to be the best you can be.
The high quality facilities were a big factor in me choosing New College Lanarkshire. They were brilliant – they allowed me to push myself to create better projects and further my skills.
If you enjoy engineering at school, or want to better yourself as a professional, there is no better place to do it than New College Lanarkshire. It has really helpful staff and brilliant facilities.
My advice to other students would be that if your course takes part in any competitions, then take part – it will most likely make your time at College easier by furthering your skills.
In ten years’ time, I see myself being an engineering technician. My dream job would be to travel the world, creating bespoke designs for renowned projects.
