Rebecca McKay already has a firm career goal in sight – she’s going to change lives through starting up businesses.
And she’s already taken the first step to achieving her dream by studying HNC Accounting at the Coatbridge Campus of New College Lanarkshire.
It was while a pupil at Lochend Community High School in Easterhouse that Rebecca took part in a ‘Career Ready’ programme that led to a six-week paid internship with Santander.
There she met a ‘Relationship Director’ whose role involved helping business start-ups – and it opened Rebecca’s eyes to a job that would be fulfilling both personally and financially.
“They go out and see what a business is about, and then give that client money to help start up their company. And that’s something that I am really into. I found an apprenticeship scheme at Barclays Bank, but I didn’t have the qualifications to get in through school. So that’s why I’m doing HNC and then HND Accounting, then I’m going to go back and get the apprenticeship with Barclays to become a relationship director.
“You do also get good money, but it’s more about seeing how happy customers are and seeing how it changes their lives. I don’t want to sit behind a desk all my life; I’m not that sort of person. I want to go out and change somebody’s life.”
Rebecca is particularly enjoying the learning environment at College.
“I’ve got a really good class and we all get on so well. Getting to know everyone, and the fact that we all study together, has been great. You learn a different way and study a different way in college. It really helps you to build up your communication skills.”
