President and Vice President Roles

Job Title: President

  • Based at: All campuses at New College Lanarkshire
  • Salary: £18,036 per annum
  • Hours: 35 per week
  • Annual leave: 27 days plus 12 public holidays

Job Purpose: To be the figurehead for the Students’ Association and responsible for its operation with democratic governance, leading student representation and progressing the institutions objective aims. 

The role of President shall be a paid full-time post with a term of one year, starting on 1 July 2017. The holder will enter into an employment contract with New College Lanarkshire. Successful candidates must complete a PVG form/check prior to the start of their term in post.

The role will include the following responsibilities:

  • Act as the figure head of New College Lanarkshire Students’ Association.
  • Represent the Student Association and be an active contributor to New College Lanarkshire Senior Management Team Meetings and Regional Lanarkshire College Board, carrying out any responsibilities required as part of this role.
  • Attend any other relevant meetings and act as the representative for students and their experiences.
  • Liaise with the Principal through quarterly meetings to ensure they are kept abreast of student issues and the work of the association.
  • Lead campaigns and focus on issues which can affect the student experience; for instance, learning and teaching, access, retention, travel, mental health, employment, student finances, student support, liberation, equality and wellbeing.
  • Ensure the association upholds the College’s Equality and Diversity policy and works to improve the representation and engagement of under-represented groups.
  • Coordinate and chair meetings of the Executive Committee.
  • Attend training relevant to their role as a representative and Board member.
  • Collect student feedback for the purpose of effectively representing students to the College and external organisations.
  • Ensure there is a comprehensive induction process for incoming sabbatical officers.
  • Liaise and work with colleagues of South Lanarkshire College Students’ Association to carry out cross-region work and projects relevant to students across Lanarkshire.
  • Organise and facilitate weekly catch ups with the Vice President.
  • Work alongside any staff employed to support the students’ association and keep them, and other relevant staff, abreast of the work of the Association.
  • Welcome students during office hours and support and signpost them to people within the College and externally.
  • Work to support the College’s coordination of the Class Rep system.
  • Work to ensure the pastoral care provided by the College is suitable and as widely available as possible.
  • Support students through disciplinary and appeal proceedings and accompany them to meetings as their representative.
  • Work with relevant stakeholders to improve and enhance the student experience.
  • Responsibility for the proper use and monitoring of the association budget alongside the College finance department.
  • Deal with media and press enquiries that the association receives.
  • Act as NUS delegate leader for New College Lanarkshire Students’ Association.
  • Travel between all six campuses as and when required to ensure all campus needs are achieved.

Job Title: Vice President

  • Based at: All campuses at New College Lanarkshire
  • Salary: £18,036per annum
  • Hours: 35 per week
  • Annual leave: 27 days plus 12 public holidays

Job purpose: The Vice President must be familiar with all the responsibilities of the President and if necessary, deputise. At all times the Vice President should work in close cooperation with the President to develop student engagement and representation.

The role of Vice President shall be a paid full-time post with a term of one year, commencing on 1 July 2017. The holder will enter into an employment contract with New College Lanarkshire.  Successful candidates must complete a PVG form/check prior to the start of their term in post.

The role will include the following responsibilities:

  • Liaise with relevant staff and departments within the College to improve the learner experience.
  • Coordinate campaigns and events.
  • Work to support the College’s coordination of the Class Rep system.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders, for example NUS, sparqs and SFC.
  • Act as the President’s deputy when required.
  • Attend any other relevant meetings and act as the representative for students and their College experiences.
  • Work to improve the student experience at New College Lanarkshire.
  • Support students through disciplinary and appeal proceedings and accompany them to meetings as their representative.
  • Work with students, College and external stakeholders to improve the student experience.
  • Sit on any relevant College and external committees.
  • Work alongside any staff employed to support the students’ association and keep them, and other relevant staff, abreast of the work of the association.
  • Welcome students during office hours and support and signpost them to people within the College and externally.
  • Attend training relevant to their role as a representative.
  • Coordinate the extra-curricular activities within the association, such as clubs and societies.
  • Collect student feedback for the purpose of effectively representing students to the College and external organisations.
  • Lead the association’s fundraising and charity work.
  • Actively engage students in the activities of the association, for example sports, societies, meetings, training and events.
  • Work to ensure the pastoral care provided by the College is suitable and as widely available as possible.
  • Ensure the association upholds the College’s Equality and Diversity policy and works to improve the representation and engagement of under-represented groups.
  • Travel between all six campuses as and when required to ensure all campus needs are achieved.
