The Modern Apprenticeship in Life Science and Related Industries is a great way of building the skills of inexperienced employees who are employed within a junior laboratory technical role in chemical, clinical and life science organisations.

Course Information


01 What the student receives

Participants will study towards a HNC Applied Science level 7. This will be completed in college over a period of 1 to 3 years. Outside of the college course, participants will be allocated a work based VQ (vocational qualifications) assessor who will work with them to plan and assess the work performed in the workplace. This will be completed within 3 years of commencing the MA programme. Funding for the course may come directly from Skills Development Scotland for candidates who meet eligibility criteria.

02 What’s covered

Participants will achieve a Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences


SVQ qualification - different options depending on the industry you work in ranging from Industrial routes, Educational routes or Life Science. More info about the content of the SVQ can be discussed on an individual basis.

03 Career Prospects on completion

Following completion of this Modern Apprenticeship there are several options open to the successful candidate who wishes to continue their development in order to progress their career.

Successful completion of the Modern Apprenticeship could lead to one of the following job roles:

  • Laboratory Technician
  • Professional Technologist

There are opportunities to continue to undertake further vocational training or academic qualifications. These may include (but are not exclusive to) the following:

  • Degrees in Chemistry, Science or a related discipline
  • Higher National Diploma in Applied Science or a related discipline
  • Developing a career in coaching through Assessor and Verifier Awards
  • Qualifications in a related area, including (but not limited to) Health & Safety, Training & Development, Business Improvement Techniques and Supervisory Management.
  • Membership of a professional institution at Technician level. Further information available at www.rsc.org
04 Entry Requirements
  • Two Higher passes at grade C or above. Ideally in Chemistry/Biology and Maths.

or

  • NC in Applied Science at Level 6 - full SQA award

Mature students may have other life experience that will help qualify them for entry. 

Overall candidates MUST have a keen interest in a career working in a laboratory.
