Overview


HNC Digital Design & Web Development has been designed to give you the essential knowledge and skills required to thrive in the exciting and ever-evolving digital industry sector. 

Starting with front-end web development using HTML and CSS, digital graphics and applying the theory of user experience (UX) and user interface design, you will build the necessary skills to take a web project from conception to completion, delivering content for laptop,PC, tablets and smartphones.

Building on these skills you’ll learn native JavaScript and how to develop a Content Management System (CMS) website using WordPress. Back-end web development will be introduced using PHP and MySqL to develop a working search facility on a website.

You will be given the opportunity to develop employability skills by team working and involvement with real clients and web projects.

Course Information


One of the following:

  • Minimum of 1 Higher  at Grade C or above and enthusiasm for the subject area
  • Relevant group of NQ Units at SCQF Level 5 or 6

Previous employment or practical experience may be considered in place of formal entry requirements.

Please note: Entry is also subject to a satisfactory interview, and an academic reference may be requested.

The aims of the qualification are:

  • To develop learners’ knowledge and skills in planning, analysis, design, developing,
    testing and evaluation of digital products.
  • To develop strategies for learning and encourage transferable skills including Core Skills
  • To enhance employment prospects.
  • To develop study and research skills.
  • To encourage learners to keep up to date with current and emerging standards and
    technologies using on-line and other resources.

You'll learn practical skills and gain knowledge in the following areas:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • JavaScript
  • Digital Graphics
  • CMS (WordPress)
  • User Experience (UX) Design
  • User Interface (UI) Design
  • PHP and MySQL

Throughout the course you will work with current and freely-available coding and design tools as well as have access to the latest Adobe and Microsoft software.

During your time, you will also be given the opportunity to study towards Adobe certification, enter external competitions and take on external web development-related work.

 

Progression directly to Year 2 of HND Web Development and Digital Design, and then directly to Year 2 or 3 of a relevant degree at several universities. You may also progress to further professional qualifications.
