Do you have a strong interest in how things work?
Are you interested in studying Biology and Chemistry to a level that would allow you to move to degree level or HNC within one year?
If so, this is the course for you. You will focus your studies in mathematics, chemistry and biology. This will help you to potentially progress to courses in Veterinary Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, Pharmacy Sciences, Food Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics, Podiatry, Honours degree adult nursing (please note that there are other nursing SWAP courses available that have less science content).
You should have a minimum of 3 clear years out of formal education (ideally 4 years). You should have a history of good mathematics qualifications from school but for whatever reason you did not continue in your studies. You should be able to demonstrate a good level of work ethic from references and attendance records. You will need to be physically and mentally fit for working at a desk, in front of a computer and standing for periods of time in a laboratory before applying for this course.
You will be interviewed and your numeracy skills will be tested during the interview period. You will also have to supply two (2) references that show your ability to learn and be successful.
Progression into any study within the NHS is subject to PVG Disclosure Scotland Criminal Records checking.

The course will contain both the National 5 and Higher levels in Chemistry and Human Biology. You will also be required to complete a double credit unit in English communications and a higher level unit in ICT. Importantly you will also study National 5 level mathematics.
Run in conjunction with the well-established Scottish Wider Access Programme for the West of Scotland (SWAP West) this course will allow successful candidates to apply for many science and numerate degrees in local universities such as Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian (GCU), Strathclyde, Stirling, UWS to name a few.
The primary focus will be for students wishing to study Honours degree nursing at GCU, Pharmacy Sciences at UWS, or any Life Science degree programme at GCU, Glasgow, UWS, Stirling and Strathclyde, but every student must be prepared to have other careers in mind.
There is also progression to our HNC Applied Science and HNC Care & Administrative Practice courses in the College. We will look at each individual’s expectations and guide you to the right decision.
