Construction students get industry insight with Bell Group

Budding construction workers on a pre-apprenticeship course in Motherwell have been given industry insight from one of the largest contract painter and decorators in the UK.

Students on the Pre-Apprenticeship programme in Construction at New College Lanarkshire’s Motherwell Campus were visited by Kirsty Docherty, Community Engagement Coordinator at Bell Group UK, who spoke about prospective career opportunities in the Painting and Decorating industry.

With its headquarters in North Lanarkshire, Bell Group is dedicated to making a difference in the communities they work in and are committed to helping the next generation of painters and decorators.

As well as providing industry insight, Kirsty talked the students through the Bell Group application form, giving tips on how to make their application stand out from the rest.

John Quinn, Lecturer in Construction at New College Lanarkshire, said: “Kirsty’s presentation was very informative and the students all felt they really benefitted from meeting someone from such a reputable organisation.

“As well as giving them insider knowledge of the industry and Bell Group specifically, Kirsty also took the learners through the application process. She also allowed us to put the Bell Group application form on Moodle, to allow our students to access and complete the application.

“We hope this is the start of a long-standing partnership with Bell Group, and hope to see some of our current students employees there in the future!”

New College Lanarkshire’s Faculty of Engineering offers a range of apprenticeship programmes, from pre-apprenticeship to graduate apprenticeship programmes.

The Construction Pre Apprentice course is designed to provide students with a range of skills, industry recognised qualifications and certificates that will assist them in gaining a construction-related apprenticeship.

Students learn the basics of Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, and Bricklaying as well as learning skills for work. The programme also introduces students to industry professionals, with students who excel taking on work placements.
