Art & Design students from New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge and Cumbernauld Campuses have designed an original Equality and Diversity Calendar.

The HNC students took on the project as part of the Graphic Design, Illustration and Cultural Identity unit giving them the opportunity to work with a live client while creating materials for the College to promote equality and diversity.

The students were provided a brief by former Equality and Diversity Officer Stephanie Kirkham and Marketing Team Leader at NCL Lisa Reid which tasked them with researching what equality and diversity-related events take place each month.

They then created their designs before presenting them to a panel of judges made up of representatives from the College’s Brand Team as well as Art & Design lecturers, who selected winning designs for each month to feature in the finished calendar.

Students selected to contribute to the final calendar included Jasmine Goer, Leo Kafily, Jeanelyse Jacobs, Natasha Peebles, Emma Hamilton-Piorkowski, Morgan Moore, Julie McDonald, Carrie Dougall, Marie Gallagher and Chantelle Hughes.

Marie Gallagher was presented the overall design award after having her design for Black History Month in October selected as the winner. She was awarded a £30 Amazon voucher.

Lisa Reid said: “All the students approached the project with enthusiasm and professionalism and we are looking forward to seeing the final results.

“We were really impressed by all the students and the level of effort they put into researching each individual topic.

“Marie’s design stood out for its originality – the creative approach and angle she took in highlighting her subject was amazing and she was a well-deserved winner.”

Sandra Ord, Art & Design Lecturer said: “I’m extremely proud of our students as it was a huge undertaking asking general Art and Design students to produce industry-standard graphic design work, but I’m delighted they all rose to the challenge.

“The project gave them invaluable industry experience of talking to clients, working with a brief, creating appropriate designs suitable for client and target audience and ultimately delivering their ideas in an industry style pitch presentation.

“A huge congratulations to Marie and all the other winners.”
