THE fantasy world of screen and stage came to life at New College Lanarkshire when students on the HND Makeup Artistry Course at Coatbridge unveiled their dazzling talent for an end of course showcase.
The 35 final year students used the skills and techniques gained during their two years at the Coatbridge Campus to transform friends and family into amazing characters based on hit films and TV series – including Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Up, Alien, The Witches, Snow White and Beauty & The Beast.
Putting on the multi-coloured spectacle tested the students’ creativity in producing painstakingly elaborate face and body make-up, wigs, false body parts and costumes as well as building themed settings to match the characters.
Visitors to the event were given a treat for the eyes on everything from extra-terrestrial beings to a pirate with a beard of octopus tentacles, wood and tree nymphs and scary looking creatures that no-one would like to meet in the hours of darkness!
Showing off their sparkling skills to family and friends was not the only objective of the evening.
Students’ work was also under the scrutiny of teaching staff whose scores on quality and inventiveness go towards the final mark for the course which trains students for careers in film, television and theatre. Visitors to the event included salon owners and representatives from the film and TV industry.
Donna Brogan, Curriculum Quality Leader in Hairdressing and Makeup Artistry, said:
“We are extremely proud of all our students. They worked exceptionally hard to produce these fantastic effects and showcase their skills to let future employers see what they can really do.
“The high standard of work produced demonstrates that some of our learners are already capable of working to industry standards.
“Hopefully the exposure from the event will help them along the way to achieving their dream job.”
