Lecturer Scott Cowie has attracted an incredible roster of international names to deliver guest lectures to Music students since lockdown began.

So far, he’s enlisted the support of Stevie Wonder’s manager Keith Harris OBE, jazz violinist Nora Germain, songwriter for the stars Eliot Kennedy, Michael Jackson/Alice Cooper guitarist Orianthi, and acoustic guitar genius Tommy Emmanuel.

Here, Scott shares his experience of delivering NCL Music’s ‘Live in House’ online platform for students of NQ Rock and Pop, HNC Music and HND Music courses.

Scott tells us:

“Despite being in lockdown, our Music students are gaining incredible insight into the music industry from some of the most successful musicians around.

The department has created an online platform called NCL Music ‘Live In House’ in which well-known musicians are invited on to be interviewed and perform for the students, and give an insight into their hugely successful careers.

This past two weeks has seen guests such as hit-maker Eliot Kennedy, who has written songs for everyone from the Spice Girls, Take That and Bryan Adams to Aretha Franklin.

Eliot gave an in-depth songwriting masterclass which left the music students as stunned as they were inspired.

We also featured an appearance from acoustic guitar genius Tommy Emmanuel, who not only gave incredible advice, but was also was kind enough to demonstrate his world-class guitar technique.

If that wasn’t good enough, on Thursday the person who many regard to be the best woman to have ever played the guitar, Orianthi, spent her afternoon giving advice to all three year groups on an amazing career.

She talked in detail about being handpicked by Michael Jackson to perform in his band, touring with Alice Cooper, performing with Carlos Santana, being a platinum-selling singer-songwriter herself, and gave priceless advice to all of the music students.

Naturally this is a tough time for all of us, but we are incredibly grateful to all of our guests so far who have been so obliging in giving their time to speak with our students.

They have been extremely engaging in these Zoom calls and our students are so inspired after being given direct advice from individuals who are at the top of their game.”
