New College Lanarkshire is to host a celebration of skills excellence that could see four young people secure a place at a ‘skills olympics’ in Russia.

The Team UK Selection event will take place at our Coatbridge Campus next week, from Tuesday 5 March until Thursday 7 March.

The event will see selected students and apprentices compete to represent the UK at WorldSkills Kazan 2019, in addition to providing a showcase of skills to members of the public and interactive taster sessions for school pupils.

The event is being organised by WorldSkills UK, which is a partnership between businesses, education and governments that aims to accelerate young people’s careers through benchmarking their skills in regional, national and international competitions.

Coinciding with Scottish Apprenticeship Week, the event is one of only eight being staged around the UK.

It will take over the 101 Park Street conference venue with competition areas and ‘have a go’ opportunities to inspire the next generation of participants.

The competitions will be focused on four skills areas: 3D Digital Game Art, IT Network Systems Administration, Mechanical Engineering: CAD, and Web Design.

Eleven competitors will battle it out to secure a place in the 30-strong Team UK, which will travel to Kazan to compete against the best in the world.

New College Lanarkshire has one representative amongst the competitors – former student Ross Megahy from Newmains, who is competing in Mechanical Engineering: CAD.

All competitors will undertake a series of tasks across three days, watched by a panel of judges and the training managers who have put them through their paces for almost two years in preparation for selection.

New College Lanarkshire students have a strong track record at international competitions, with Ross Megahy winning a bronze medal at EuroSkills Budapest 2018, Betsy Crosbie winning a Medallion for Excellence at EuroSkills Gothenburg 2016, while Andrew Beel and Richard Miller both received a Medallion for Excellence at WorldSkills São Paulo 2015.

Martin McGuire, Principal of New College Lanarkshire, said: “Skills lie at the heart of everything we do at New College Lanarkshire, so to have the opportunity to host a competition featuring some of the most talented students from around the UK is an exciting prospect for us.

“Everyone at the College is very proud of how our students have performed at national skills competitions like WorldSkills UK, which has only been possible through the commitment of dedicated staff who encourage them every step of the way.

“I am pleased to welcome representatives and competitors from WorldSkills UK to our Coatbridge Campus to see our fantastic facilities first-hand, and I wish all those hoping for a place at WorldSkills Kazan the very best of luck.”

The competitors selected for Team UK will be announced on March 11. Team UK will compete at WorldSkills Kazan 2019, which takes place August 22–27.

Dr Neil Bentley-Gockmann OBE, Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, said: “I am delighted to attend the Team UK Selection event at New College Lanarkshire. The College not only offers fantastic facilities for us to select the UK’s top apprentices and students to compete at WorldSkills Kazan 2019, but it is also consistently amongst the top performers in our UK-wide skills competitions and its students achieve the world-class benchmark when we compete internationally.

“By working with New College Lanarkshire and other colleges and employers in Scotland, we are not only giving young people the opportunity to reach their full potential but we also believe can transfer the insights gained from competing against other countries into the wider Scottish economy, driving up training standards for young people to world-class levels, giving a much-needed boost to productivity.”
