Case Study detail

Ma. Carmina Provan, 43, who lives in Gartcosh, is a student of HND Accounting at our Coatbridge Campus.

Born in the Philippines, she was named Student of the Year at our 2015 awards ceremony at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in recognition of combining her studies with treatment for breast cancer.

I decided to study at New College Lanarkshire because it gave me an opportunity to expand my knowledge in accounting. I found it to be convenient for me as it was easy to access with public transport.

There were a number of things I really liked about the course – I particularly enjoyed enhancing my knowledge in areas such as analytical thinking, information technology and problem solving. I also enjoyed working through the coursework and receiving feedback from my tutors.

The most important lesson I have learned is the value of perseverance, commitment, patience and dedication.

The highpoint so far was being awarded Student of the Year. The most memorable part is making good friends on the course.

I found the learning environment to be modern, with good availability of IT. The tutors and support staff are very helpful in giving advice and guidance.

If anyone else is thinking about studying Accounting, I would advise them to go for it! It is a great course that requires dedication and responsibility with their time management.

It is fun to be a student – you meet different people from a wide range of backgrounds and learn new things together. You should be committed and focused in order to achieve your goal.

In ten years’ time, I see myself working in an accountancy firm and my dream would be to become a fully-fledged accountant.
