Ryan Morrison, 18, who lives in Torrance, East Dunbartonshire is a student who has quickly progressed from Employability Fund into employment. He completed a Stage 2 and a Stage 3 programme at our Kirkintilloch Campus and has now secured a job in retail with Poundland in Bishopbriggs, and also has a place to study NC Electrical Engineering in Glasgow.
The course helped me build on my personal development and employability skills, which supported me in securing both employment and a place in college. I now feel more confident and positive about both my career prospects and my life.
My favourite part was getting to meet new people – both the staff and other students were positive and supportive. This helped me become a more confident person and find a sense of direction.
The classroom study helped me in Stage 2 by developing my confidence and communication skills. Stage 3 provided support in employability skills, such as preparing a CV and being confident with job interviews.
By having the opportunity to go on work placement, it taught me how to work as part of a team and understand the world of work. My Stage 3 placement at Poundland resulted in being offered employment, which was a real moment of success for me.
When I was ready to leave school in 2015, I had nowhere to go and I wasn’t sure what to do. The careers advisor from Skills Development Scotland referred me to Stage 2 at the Kirkintilloch Campus.
When I left school I was unsure of what direction to take and how to kick-start my career. I lacked confidence, communication skills and employability skills. Over the Stage 2 and Stage 3 courses, I have developed in these areas and now feel confident about taking on new challenges.
I would definitely recommend Employability Fund courses to anyone who feels they need support. I would say to them to be prepared to work hard and also to listen to the staff. I wouldn’t have got this far without their help.
In ten years’ time, I would like to be an Electrical Engineer working within the telecommunications sector for an organisation like Sky or BT.
