Course Information


01 What the student receives

This Modern Apprenticeships programme covers both the practical work based skills, as well as the academic underpinning knowledge required to work within the Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical) industry.

Over the duration of the programme, Candidates will be assessed in their normal working environment to satisfactorily complete the PEO Level 2 SVQ and the Level 3 SVQ in Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical). The PEO Level 2 must be completed prior to starting the Level 3 award.

Candidates will also be required to attend college on a day release basis for the duration of the programme. Whilst at college, the Candidates will study towards the completion of the NC Engineering award. The National Certificate course provides underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to progress within a mechanical engineering maintenance discipline.

02 What’s covered

The PEO Level 2 SVQ consists of eight units, three mandatory and five optional. The three mandatory units include, complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements, working efficiently and effectively in engineering and using and communicating technical Information. The five optional units will be selected to suit the needs of the employer, ensuring that the Candidate develops skills matching his/ her daily work.

The Level 3 SVQ focuses on industry specific engineering skills deemed appropriate to the Candidate and employer needs.

The National Certificate course could include the following subjects: Communication Core Skill Unit, Mathematics: Craft 1, Engineering: Using Information Technology, Pneumatics and Hydraulics, Maintenance Safety, Health and Safety: Engineering, Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) for Engineers, Engineering Manufacturing Processes, Engineering Dimensional Control, Engineering Materials, Engineering Material Removal Principles, Engineering Quality: An Introduction, Graphical Engineering Communication, Industrial CNC Machining, Mechanical Engineering Principles.

Successful completion of each subject involves a number of written and practical assessments.

03 Career Prospects on completion

On completion of the Modern Apprenticeship programme, Candidates will be qualified and appropriately skilled to work in the engineering industry as time served Maintenance Engineers (Mechanical).

With suitable experience candidates could progress to Supervisor/Foreman level working within the Manufacture and Service industries, installing and repairing mechanical equipment and systems.

04 Entry Requirements

Candidates must be employed within the Engineering industry with a focus on mechanical engineering maintenance.
