HNC Acting and Performance
Overview
Train as an actor. Perform for a real audience!
HNC Acting and Performance is practical, full-time training for performers. You'll work on acting, voice, movement and devising, and perform in public theatre productions.
Voice is a particular strength here. Our staff are fully trained in the Estill Voice Training method, with two full-time Estill Master Trainers on campus, so you'll develop a voice that holds up under professional demands.
You'll also work on acting for camera, train with staff who've worked in the industry, and take part in workshops led by people working in it now.
Entry
Who can apply
Applications are welcome from performers at all levels. Previous experience is useful but not essential, and Higher English or Higher Drama are helpful rather than required.
Your audition
You'll perform two contrasting monologues to a panel and have a short interview. There may also be a workshop session with other applicants.
We're looking at your potential and how you work, not expecting a finished performance.

On the day
Wear something you can move in.
Learn
The course is built around practical classes and workshops.
Acting
You'll develop your technique through classes, workshops and rehearsal, learning to work with text and build a character.
Voice
Taught by Estill-trained staff, including two full-time Master Trainers, you'll learn to use your voice safely and effectively in performance.
Movement
You'll build physical awareness, control and expression, essential for almost all professional work now.
Devising theatre
You'll create original work with other performers, learning to build a piece from scratch.
Acting for camera
You'll learn how screen acting differs from stage work and get comfortable performing to camera.
Methods and practitioners
You'll explore the approaches that shaped modern acting and find what works for you.
Perform publicly
You'll take part in public theatre performances, and in industry-led workshops with people currently working in the profession.
