Course overview

Study the BSc (Hons) Dental Nursing at New College Lanarkshire in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). As the first degree of its kind in Scotland, this three-year programme combines university-level study with hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art dental training facilities, preparing you for a successful career in modern dental practice.

Year overview

In Year 1, you’ll begin building your core knowledge and practical skills in dental nursing. You’ll study a range of subjects including clinical dental skills, oral health assessment, maintaining dentition, oral imaging and radiography and supporting non-routine treatments. You’ll also complete the ASPIRE: Foundations for Success module to support your wider learning.

The course is full-time, with around four days of study each week. This typically includes two days on campus and two days in a dental practice setting.

Your supervised clinical placement will help you apply what you’ve learned, developing your confidence and experience in a real working environment.

The course has been purposefully designed in response to demand from industry professionals to provide a programme of study for dental nurses to future-proof their career and place them at the same level as other professional groups within a dental team.

 

Entry

To apply for the BSc Dental Nursing programme, you must have:

  • SCQF Level 6/NC Dental Nursing (or Equivalent)
  • 2 Highers level C and above.
  • Non - standard entry may be considered if deemed appropriate at the discretion of the department on completion of a skill test

Please note:

  • Participation at an information session, skills assessment and interview forms part of the selection criteria.
  • Access on to this course will be subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check in the form of an Enhanced PVG.
  • A financial payment of £50 will be made by each student as a contribution towards PVGs, uniform and health clearance checks (this can be made in instalments or a one-off payment)

Full time: 4 days-2 days per week campus attendance and 2 days per week in placement.

  • Maintaining the Dentition
  • Oral Health Assessment
  • Oral Imaging Supported by Radiography
  • Supporting Non-routine Dental Treatments

Supervised clinical placement will continue to develop practical experience in a dental practice setting.

You’ll study modules including academic skills for dental nurses, oral health promotion with technology, computer-aided design for the dental team, promoting inclusion in oral health, therapeutic interventions in healthcare, and anatomy and imaging in dental practice.

The course remains full-time, with around four days of study each week. This typically includes two days on campus and two days in a dental practice setting.

Your supervised clinical placement will continue to strengthen your practical experience, helping you apply your learning in a real working environment and prepare for more advanced practice.

Entry

To apply for the BSc Dental Nursing programme, you must have:

  • Successfully passed Year 1 of the BSc Dental Nursing programme
  • SVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing/HNC in Dental Nursing or Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing

In Year 3, you’ll refine your skills and prepare for professional practice, with a focus on advanced dental nursing and career development. You’ll study modules including dental nursing additional skills, research for dental practice, leadership and management, technologies in dentistry, professional development, and complex oral health care.

The course remains full-time, with around four days of study each week. This typically includes two days on campus and two days in a dental practice setting.

Your supervised clinical placement will continue to build your experience, supporting you to work more independently and confidently in a real dental practice environment.

Entry

To apply for the BSc Dental Nursing programme, you must:

  • Successfully passed Year 2 of the BSc programme
  • HND: Dental Nursing and be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) awarded within the last 5 years.
