Former student credits kitchen design business success to college course

A former architectural design student from New College Lanarkshire is celebrating another year of his own kitchen design business – and credits the skills he learned at college for his success.

Motherwell lad Chris Murison opened Bonnie Kitchens in Orbiston Street, Motherwell in June 2017 and has continued to reap the rewards since.

Completing HND Computer Aided Architectural Design Technology (CAADT) in 2011 at the College’s Motherwell Campus, Chris went on to complete his degree in Architectural Technology at Robert Gordon University with direct entry into third year thanks to his achievements at college.

Now fulfilling a lifelong dream of owning his own business and designing bespoke, unique kitchens, Chris tributes his college programme for giving him a grasp of the industry.

He said: “The experience I gained from studying at New College Lanarkshire was fantastic and it helped me learn new skills which I still use to this day in every project or task.

“It also gave me the confidence and knowledge to continue to university and now start my own business, which gives me the opportunity to help others and provide the highest quality of service – which sometimes wasn’t possible while working for other companies.

“I would absolutely recommend the course to any aspiring designers or architects as it sets you up with the skills to succeed in the construction industry and help is always available when needed.”

Vivien Townsley, his former lecturer at the College, said: “The course, although aimed at architectural technology, is very diverse and opens lots of doors to many different design opportunities.

“Chris’s success is a great example of one of the routes a qualification from NCL can lead to.”

Bonnie Kitchens provides a wide range of bespoke and unique kitchens and accessories as well as worktops, appliances and flooring.

Chris put together a team of designers, rather than sales people, to deliver flexible, cost-effective solutions for all investment levels, whether it’s bespoke built up units or flat pack. His services also include fitting, electrics, plumbing, tiling and plastering.
