Prince’s Trust programme helps student into employment

A Prince’s Trust personal development programme at New College Lanarkshire’s Motherwell Campus has helped a young person from Shotts secure employment.

Jason Connelly, a previous student of the Prince’s Trust Team Programme has started working with Prince’s Trust Scotland as Operations Support Administrator through a partnership with Community Jobs Scotland.

Jason, 21, completed the 12-week team-building programme developing interpersonal and leadership skills while meeting new people and enhancing his confidence.

He said: “Before the Prince’s Trust I was going through a bad time in my life. I wasn’t enjoying university and eventually dropped out. I was then in a period of limbo where I wasn’t really doing much. A few months later my mum showed me a link to the ‘Team Programme’ run by The Prince’s Trust at New College Lanarkshire. It was the best choice I ever made to join the Team programme.

“The Team Programme was a brilliant time in my life. I decided that I would take a new mind-set to tackle it, forcing myself to be more outgoing and take more of a leadership role where able. This, in combination with the great environment, content of the programme and amazing support from the Team Leader Kathleen, has contributed to my success.

“Over the course of the programme I was given the opportunity to do my work placement at the Prince’s Trust offices in Glasgow. I got to see many different aspects of the charity and the programmes and support they offer.

“At the end of the programme, we had a presentation where all family, friends and Prince’s Trust staff attended. I was then invited to apply for the Community Jobs Scotland post with the Prince’s Trust and, in due course, was offered the position!

“I would recommend the Prince’s Trust to anyone, not just because I now work there but because I have seen the work they do and the difference they make.

“I cannot thank Prince’s Trust and New College Lanarkshire enough for all it has given me and will do my best to use this chance to be the best I can be.”

Kathleen McBirnie, Prince’s Trust Team Leader at New College Lanarkshire said: “Jason’s contribution was invaluable in supporting the learners of the team programme throughout the 12 weeks. He really encouraged and helped the other participants to succeed.”

Stuart Matson, Manager of Prince’s Trust programmes at New College Lanarkshire said: “We are delighted that Jason has secured employment with such a renowned charity as the Prince’s Trust. His success demonstrates what can be achieved through the Team programmes support in a relatively short period of time.”
