HNC Musical Theatre
Overview
Sing. Act. Dance. Train in all three, properly!
HNC Musical Theatre is full-time training for triple-threat performers. You'll work across acting, singing and dance, taught by specialist lecturers in each discipline rather than one tutor covering all three.
Singing is a particular strength here. Our staff are fully trained in the Estill Voice Training method, with two full-time Estill Master Trainers on campus, so you'll build a voice that lasts eight shows a week.
You'll train in ballet, jazz and contemporary alongside acting and musical theatre repertoire, perform in public productions through the year, and work with people currently in the profession.
Entry
Who can apply
Applications are welcome from performers at all levels. Some previous experience is useful but not essential, and Higher English, Drama or Music are helpful rather than required.
Your audition
You'll sing, act and dance. The dance call is taught on the day, so there's nothing to prepare for that, and there'll be a short interview too.
We're looking at your potential across all three disciplines. You don't need to be equally strong in everything.
What to prepare
We'll confirm your song and monologue requirements when we arrange your audition, and we're happy to suggest pieces if you're not sure where to start.
On the day
Wear something you can move in and bring dance shoes if you have them.
Learn
You'll train across all three disciplines with specialist lecturers in each.
Acting
You'll develop your acting technique through classes, workshops and rehearsal, learning to work with text and build a character.
Singing and voice
Taught by Estill-trained staff, including two full-time Master Trainers, you'll build vocal technique that's reliable under professional demands, alongside spoken voice work.
Dance
Ballet, jazz and contemporary, taught by dance specialists, building the technique and versatility musical theatre demands.
Musical theatre repertoire
You'll build a repertoire you can take into auditions, working across the range of styles the industry expects.
Production and performance
You'll perform in public productions through the year, learning what it takes to rehearse a show and deliver it to an audience.
Industry workshops
You'll work with people currently in the profession, keeping you current with what the industry expects now.
