Overview

Unleash your creativity and develop the professional skills needed to thrive in the fast-paced world of fashion and media make-up. This dynamic introductory course combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, giving you a deep understanding of the artistry, techniques, and industry context behind every look.

You’ll explore developing make-up techniques, anatomy & colour theory, period and character design, and current trends in editorial and fashion make-up. Working in professional studio environments, you’ll build a diverse portfolio that showcases your individual style and technical ability.

Whether you dream of working backstage at fashion shows, on set for film and TV, or as a freelance make-up artist, this course is the perfect preparation for progression to advanced HN study and a professional career in fashion and media make-up.

 

Entry

Minimum entry requirements:

A minimum of 3 National 4 or National 5 Awards or 3 Standard Grades at Grade 4 or above (min Nat 4 English preferred) or Level 5 Introduction to Make-up

Excellent communication skills and an enthusiasm for this subject are essential and the applicant must include a personal statement with their application. 

Applicants will be invited for a competitive interview where you will get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you are interested in this subject area.

Important note: Applicants must be age 16 by 15th October. This is due to health and safety requirements.

  • Fashion & editorial make-up – creating on-trend and high-fashion looks for photoshoots and catwalks.
  • Media make-up for TV & Film – designing and applying makeup suitable for different camera and lighting conditions.
  • Period & character make-up – exploring historical and themed makeup styles for performance and production.
  • Specialist make-up techniques – introducing creative, avant-garde, and fantasy makeup design.
  • Make-up design & planning – developing concepts from research through to completed looks.
  • Colour theory & application – understanding how to use colour effectively in fashion and media contexts.
  • Portfolio development – presenting work professionally through photoshoots and digital media.
  • Anatomy & physiology for Makeup Artists – skin structure, face shapes, and how products interact with the skin.
  • Health, safety & hygiene – maintaining professional standards and client care.
  • Product knowledge & cosmetic science – understanding the function and formulation of makeup products.
  • Lighting, photography & media awareness – adapting makeup for different visual outputs.
  • Working to a creative brief – interpreting and responding to industry-style assignments.
  • Teamwork & communication skills – collaborating with photographers, stylists, and models.

 

You may be required to attend 1 twilight session per week
