Being the equivalent of a 1st year undergraduate degree, our HNC Sound Production course on offer at our Coatbridge and Cumbernauld campuses (located just 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre) covers a wide range of specialised music and sound production disciplines. Students embark on a host of practical projects designed to train and prepare for further academic aspirations and a career within the Creative Industries. With subjects such as: Studio Recording & Mixing, Sound Design for Films and Games, Sound for Live Events, and Music Production, you'll be skilled to a high level benefiting from using industry standard hardware and software by the likes of SSL, Ableton and Avid.

Course Information

One of:

  • 1 Higher grade pass or equivalent relevant NQ unit passes.
  • Successful completion of NC Music and Sound Production.

You will also be required to undertake an interview. Alternatively, other relevant work experience/prior learning may be considered in place of formal qualifications. In this case you may also be required to submit a portfolio of work to gain entry.


You will learn the essential practical and theoretical skills necessary to work within the Sound Production industry. You will study the intermediate usage of microphones and other hardware in various contexts as well as DAW functionality using industry standard software such as Pro Tools and Ableton Live.

By conducting your own recording sessions under supervision from your lecturers, you will explore intermediate practical audio editing skills that are used for both TV & Film and Game design, as well as evolving your ability to create simple song arrangements and productions within a music context. You’ll also develop your skills in the much required use of synthetic sound design and sampling.

In addition to this, you’ll also learn about Sound for Live Events where you’ll have access to various live performance spaces developing your critical listening skills using a range of analogue and digital mixing desks, PA systems and microphones.

Throughout the course you will develop your understanding of the professional skills, work habits, and attitudes expected by the Music and Sound Production industry. This will include client interaction, working in teams, and delivering high quality work to tight deadlines.

You’ll also be encouraged to work with students from other disciplines including Music and Music Business collaborating on projects that will introduce you to working in real-life situations.

By enrolling at an approved Avid Learning centre, opportunities exist to complement your learning by studying optional industry led qualifications such as Pro Tools 101 / 110.

Former students have been highly sought after within the industry, with a high percentage going straight into employment or further study at University.
