Budding construction apprentices were given insight into one of the largest painting, decorating and building maintenance companies in the UK during Scottish Apprenticeship Week when they had a visit from a representative of Bell Decorating Group.

Kirsty Docherty, Community Engagement Co-ordinator for Bell Decorating Group in Scotland, gave a presentation to students on the Construction Pre-Apprenticeship programme, which is designed to provide students with a range of skills, industry-recognised qualifications and certificates that will assist them in the pursuit of a construction-related apprenticeship.

Kirsty spoke to the students about the apprenticeship programme at Bell Decorating Group and the process of applying for one. She also gave insight into how the Airdrie based company has grown into one of the largest of its kind in the UK and has diversified into other aspects of the construction sector to include joinery, electrical work and plastering.

John Quinn, Lecturer in Construction at the College, said: “We are delighted that such a large national company wants to be involved in a partnership with our college.

“This gives an opportunity for young people in our local community to gain an apprenticeship with a reputable company which will enhance their skills, knowledge and career prospects.”

New College Lanarkshire, which has a specialist engineering and construction block at its Motherwell Campus where the pre-apprenticeship programme is held, has a strong partnership with Bell Decorating Group – with two pre-apprenticeship students having already achieved apprenticeships with the company in 2018.

Kirsty said: “As an industry leading company we are always looking for the finest new talent, and the pre-apprenticeship programme at New College Lanarkshire ensures that those looking to apply have the right blend of on the job experience as well as the skills, knowledge and dedication to succeed in an apprenticeship.

“If these students are as high a standard as those who applied last year, we will be delighted!”
