Year overview

Make your own work. Build your own career!

The Honours year is where you stop waiting to be cast and start creating. You'll devise and produce new work, perform in a new work festival, and leave with a business plan for your own practice.

Acting is a portfolio career. Most performers write, direct, teach, produce and run companies alongside performing, and this year prepares you for that reality rather than a single job title.

You'll work with alternative theatre practitioners, explore applied theatre in community and social settings, and develop the business skills to fund and sustain your own work.

BA (Hons) Acting with Creative Enterprise is validated by the University of the West of Scotland.

Entry

Two ways in

1. Starting with the BA year
If you hold an HND in a relevant subject, you'll join at BA Acting (Year 1) and progress to the Honours year.

2. Direct entry to Honours
If you already hold a BA Acting degree, or a degree in a related subject, you can apply to join the Honours year directly.

Studied elsewhere? You're welcome to apply with an HND or degree from another institution.

Entry is by audition. We'll explain the format and what to prepare when we arrange it.

Learn

Four modules, running together, that turn you from a performer into someone who can make work and sustain a career.

Artistic Development
You'll work with alternative theatre practitioners through artist-led workshops and case studies, exploring how theatre is made in communities and what applied performance can do in social settings. It's a year to get curious and work out what kind of artist you want to be.

Creative and Cultural Collaborations
You'll devise new work, taking on the dual role of performer and maker. Starting with an intensive project on devising and concept development, you'll then design and develop your own performance project in a form you choose.

Creative Enterprise
You'll learn how the business of the creative industries actually works: funding, government support, social enterprise, building a company, developing partnerships and managing it all. The module ends with a full business plan for your own practice.

Creative Initiative
You'll develop a solo or collaborative piece for a new work festival, choosing where your focus sits, whether that's performing, directing, choreography, musical direction or producing. You'll also help make the festival itself happen.

Creative Enterprise and Creative Initiative run at the same time, so the business plan you build is grounded in work you're actually making.
