Access to Radio Production and Podcasting: CFM

Overview

Get behind the mic.

Ever fancied presenting a show or making your own podcast? Our Access to Radio Production and Podcasting course is a hands-on introduction to how radio and podcasts are actually made, run with Cumbernauld FM.

You'll learn how to plan and produce a show, record and edit audio, interview people and use your voice with confidence, working in a real radio station alongside people who do it every week.

The course runs for 18 weeks, two days a week at the Cumbernauld FM studios based in Cumbernauld Campus.

It's open to anyone with an interest in radio, whether you're just out of school, coming back to learning after a while, or retired and looking for something new. Everyone starts somewhere, and no experience is needed.

Entry

Who can apply
Anyone with an interest in radio or podcasting. You don't need qualifications or experience, and you don't need to have worked in media before.

What we're looking for
That you're interested in radio, podcasting or telling stories with sound, and you're willing to give it a go.

The interview
We'll invite you in for a chat about what interests you and what you'd like to get out of the course. There's nothing to prepare, and you're welcome to bring someone with you.

If you've worked in radio or media before, tell us, but it's not needed.

Learn

What you'll do
This is a practical course. You'll be making radio and podcasts from early on, not just learning about them.

Recording and editing
You'll learn how to record clear, good-quality sound, and how to edit it on a computer. We'll show you the software from scratch, so it doesn't matter if you've never used it.

Making it sound right
You'll learn how to mix your recordings, add music and sound effects, and get a finished piece sounding the way you want it.

Finding and telling stories
Good radio starts before the microphone goes on. You'll learn how to research an idea, write a script, interview people and tell a story that keeps listeners with you.

Being on air
You'll build confidence using your voice, presenting, and working to time, with support from people who do it every week at Cumbernauld FM.

What you'll get out of it

  • A real radio station. You'll learn in working studios, not a classroom mock-up.
  • Your own work. You'll finish with pieces you've made yourself, ready to share.
  • People to learn with. Our groups bring together all ages and backgrounds, from school leavers to retired people.
  • Somewhere to take it. Whether you want to keep going as a hobby, volunteer at the station, or study further, you'll have the skills to do it.
