BSc Dental Nursing - Year 1
Overview
In Year 1, you’ll begin building your core knowledge and practical skills in dental nursing. You’ll study a range of subjects including clinical dental skills, oral health assessment, maintaining dentition, oral imaging and radiography and supporting non-routine treatments. You’ll also complete the ASPIRE: Foundations for Success module to support your wider learning.
The course is full-time, with around four days of study each week. This typically includes two days on campus and two days in a dental practice setting.
Your supervised clinical placement will help you apply what you’ve learned, developing your confidence and experience in a real working environment.
The course has been purposefully designed in response to demand from industry professionals to provide a programme of study for dental nurses to future-proof their career and place them at the same level as other professional groups within a dental team.
Entry
To apply for the BSc Dental Nursing programme, you must have:
- SCQF Level 6/NC Dental Nursing (or Equivalent)
- 2 Highers level C and above.
- Non - standard entry may be considered if deemed appropriate at the discretion of the department on completion of a skill test
Please note:
- Participation at an information session, skills assessment and interview forms part of the selection criteria.
- Access on to this course will be subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check in the form of an Enhanced PVG.
- A financial payment of £50 will be made by each student as a contribution towards PVGs, uniform and health clearance checks (this can be made in instalments or a one-off payment)
Learn
Full time: 4 days-2 days per week campus attendance and 2 days per week in placement.

Supervised clinical placement will continue to develop practical experience in a dental practice setting.
